Dora

Dora, who used to live with us (see Dora bio), lives in an aviary with 12 other pigeons that are either disabled, very tame or simply too fancy to survive in the wild. I see them every day during the weekdays and enjoy watching the pigeon politics that go on in the aviary. Dora usually comes out from her nest and greets me by demanding treats. Not pushy at all!

Two pigeons vie for her attention: Pidge and Stanley.

Since Stanley cannot fly due to a broken wing, he hasn’t managed to win Dora over completely, however, I think she likes his attentions since I have seen them together.

Pidge is a very friendly boy (about 12 years old) who likes people and will greet you with vigorous cooing and prancing. He follows Dora about like a little puppy dog and she certainly likes his affections. They have mated and raised a few pairs of babies (much to my annoyance since I usually manage to take her eggs away before she starts incubating, however, if she lays them on the weekend I’m not there to remove them).

Dora seems quite happy with her two boyfriends and doesn’t mind me coming round to say hello, although she isn’t as affectionate to me as she used to be. The other pigeons in the aviary are wonderful and I took the liberty to name them all after observing who’s with who and becoming quite attached to them.
